Introduction – CLAT
CLAT
(Common Law Admission Test) is a national level entrance exam organised periodically by 18 NLUs (National Law University). Conducted and monitored to grant admissions to LLB and LLM courses offered at various law universities in India. An approximate 50k aspiring candidates appear for the law entrance exam annually.
Quick Facts
- The exam will be conducted in online mode across 138 centers in India
- All candidates who register successfully will be issued their CLAT Admit Card in April
- CLAT Cut Off for all NLUs is expected to be higher this year. It will be different for each of the NLUs and will also vary for each round of counselling
- The procedure of CLAT Seat Allotment will commence post declaration of results in May

CLAT Eligibility Criteria
For CLAT UG Program
- Age Limit: Candidates who are above 20 years of age in case of UR/NRI/NRI Sponsored category and above 22 years of age in case of SC/ST/OBC/SAP category as on 1st July are eligible
- Academic Qualification: Candidate must have passed 10+2 or any equivalent examination
For CLAT PG Program
- Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for the candidates appearing in CLAT to pursue post-graduate programs. Thus, candidates of all ages are eligible
- Academic Qualification: Candidate must have an LLB or any other equivalent degree

Syllabus for UG Course
CLAT Syllabus for the Undergraduate program covers questions from
General Knowledge & Current Affairs, Legal Aptitude, English, Mathematics and Logical Reasoning. Highest weightage will be carried by GK and Legal Aptitude section in the law entrance exam.

CLAT Syllabus for PG Course
Constitutional Law and Jurisprudence will both have an equal weightage of 50 marks each in the question paper. Whereas, the rest of the questions will be coming from different topics like
Criminal law, International Law, etc. The details regarding Constitutional law and Jurisprudence is given below for reference:
- Constitutional Law – Practices and doctrines that govern the functioning of a modern state and other political communities
- Jurisprudence – Syllabus prescribed in the graduation degree course
- The Tort Law – Crucial tortious obligations like Negligence, Nuisance and Defamation
- Criminal Law – Principles of criminal liability and mens rea (“guilty mind” in Criminal Law)
- International – Public & Private International Law and Supranational Law
Exam Pattern: CLAT
CLAT exam pattern is set differently for both LLB and LLM programs. CLAT Exam Pattern has not seen any major changes over the past few years.
- Number of Sections: In LLB – 5 Sections and In LLM – 3 sections
- Nature of Questions: Objective type (MCQs)
- Total Questions: 200 Questions in LLB and 150 Questions in LLM
- Marking Scheme: 1 mark of each question
- Negative Marking: 0.25 marks deducted for a wrong answer

CLAT Exam Cutoffs
CLAT 2024 Cutoffs are the minimum mark or rank required to secure admission to a given national law university. As per the CLAT 2024 paper analysis, the CLAT Exam 2024 was comparatively easier as compared to the previous year. CLAT 2024 expected cutoffs for Top NLUs are expected to go above 90.
Key Points – CLAT Cutoffs
- This year CLAT Cut off is expected to increase by 5% – 10%.
- NLUs will release separate cut offs for each program as per a candidate’s category
- Candidates qualifying the minimum cut off for CLAT can participate in the centralized CLAT Counselling
- Counselling Process is conducted in four rounds and CLAT Seat Allotment is done on merit-cum-preference basis
Counselling CLAT
- CLAT Exam Counselling dates to be notified soon
- Candidate must indicate their NLUs preference online where they want to take admission
- There will be a centralized admission process for CLAT and admission will be done on the basis of merit-cum-preference
- Candidates have to deposit INR 50,000 for securing allotted seat during counselling procedure
